Geelong Rail Duplication

Project Name
Geelong Rail Duplication

Project Completion
2024

Location
Geelong

The Victorian and Australian governments have invested more than $1 billion in upgrades to the Geelong Line, enabling more frequent and reliable services for Victoria’s fastest-growing city. Scope Australia is proud to have played a key role in these works, contributing to both the Waurn Ponds Train Stabling Facility and the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication Project, delivered by the Djilang Alliance (McConnell Dowell, Downer, Arup and WSP Australia).

The completion of this major upgrade marks a significant milestone, delivering critical infrastructure improvements for the growing communities south of Geelong, including:

  • The removal of two dangerous and congested level crossings at Fyans Street and Surf Coast Highway.
  • Major upgrades to Marshall and South Geelong stations including second platforms and accessible overpasses, and 300 new car parks.
  • Approximately 8km of track duplication between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds stations to increase reliability and boost capacity on the line.
  • 5km of new walking and cycling paths to create a continuous connection between South Geelong, Marshall and Waurn Ponds stations.

A pivotal phase of any rail infrastructure project is when train services are paused to allow for critical upgrades and construction work. During these periods, Scope Australia provided 24/7 services and logistics solutions to ensure that the project progressed efficiently and within the strict timeframes.

Our dedicated team worked around the clock to manage emergency tasks and logistical challenges, ensuring minimal disruption and timely completion of the project. Trains returned to the Geelong and Warrnambool Line as scheduled on Monday 26 August after a 72-day closure.

Our commitment to sustainability is also a key focus, as we prioritise reusing and recycling materials and transporting them to treatment facilities where possible. With these efforts, Scope Australia continues to play a vital role in advancing regional infrastructure, improving local communities, and contributing to a more sustainable future.
