The Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment is one of regional Victoria’s most significant health infrastructure projects, backed by a $655 million investment from the Victorian Government. Once complete, the upgraded facility will deliver expanded healthcare services for the growing Ballarat community, including a new emergency department, women and children’s hub, and critical care floor.

Scope Australia is proud to have played a key role in the early stages of this major redevelopment, successfully delivering the foundational works that have enabled the transition into construction.

During this phase, more than 50,000 cubic metres of material were excavated and removed from site. This was supported by Scope’s dedicated fleet and strong operational presence across the Ballarat region, ensuring efficient and consistent delivery throughout the program.

A critical component of the project was the management and recovery of excavated material. Truckloads of mixed fill, including basalt rock, were transported to Scope Australia’s nearby Buninyong processing facility. From here, materials undergo a controlled process of sorting, crushing, and repurposing.

Through this approach, materials that would otherwise be considered waste are transformed into valuable resources – ranging from specified road base products to structural fill for future infrastructure projects. This reflects Scope Australia’s commitment to practical, circular economy outcomes, ensuring materials remain in use and are returned to Victoria’s infrastructure network.

The redevelopment will have a lasting impact on the region, supporting an additional 18,000 emergency patients, 14,500 inpatients, and 4,000 surgeries annually, while also generating significant local employment opportunities.
